WHO ARE COLONEL BASTARD?

;

Greetings, and welcome to the official web site of Colonel Bastard, the popular art-rock beat combo. The band are currently based in Cambridge, UK having relocated from their first home in the small town of Liskeard, Cornwall.

Formed in late 1998 by fellow Liskeard School students Ben Garnett, Martin White and Dan Onions, the band immediately started working on new material, building on the strong musical history of Messrs Garnett and White. With Martin's talented brother Chris added a week later to complete the line-up, a truly unique band was born. The blend of post-XTC Blur-pop and funkadelic psychedelia, combined with the inspired riffing of joint-songsmith Benny G soon garnered the band a cult audience. At the years went on, the band fell in love with a variety of styles, stockpiling an original repertoire of rock, punk, pop and ska, whilst always striving to create sounds to be filed under popular. The departure of Onions in late 2002 created a power-pop trio whose telepathic musicianship and close harmony cast their by now familiar back catalogue into new shapes and sizes.

Influences are numerous and few - yet such devious contradictions haunt the powerful and often profoundly insightful Bastard repertoire. Here, quiet acoustics go to bed with punk riffs and powerpop sits at the table with avant-garde six-string experiments.

The strength of the Bastard set is continuing to impress those lucky enough to see live. Most members of the group are multi-instrumentalists, which often means moments of frantic instrument changes between numbers. And yet, the band remain true to their founding principle - to explore new dimensions of pop with intelligence and wit.

When I first saw this band, they were like a rough diamond - rough and diamondy. Since then, they have been polished and refined, adding new songs, new directions, new strands, new techniques, new languages and, finally, second guitarist Russell Garnett.

I am proud to be a Bastard.
